Minimum Qualifications In order to be considered for appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum requirements for taking the Junior Landscape Architect examination are:
Either 1. a bachelor’s or higher-level degree in landscape architecture,
Or 2. a Landscape Architect’s License from any state or political subdivision of the United States.
Junior Landscape Architects who have successfully completed one year of service and have passed Sections 1 and 2 of the Landscape Architect Registration examination (LARE) will be advanced to Landscape Architect, Grade 20 (beginning salary). Failure to obtain a passing result on both Section 1 & 2 of the LARE within the first year of service will result in removal from your position.
Duties Description Under the direction of a higher-level supervisor, the duties of the Landscape Architect may include, but are not limited to:
• Providing landscape architecture design and support for high priority/expedited projects to advance the capital program;
• Assisting in advancing and expediting environmental studies/analyses associated with Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), Environmental Assessments (EAs), and other documents associated with assigned high priority/expedited projects; preparing architectural renderings and presentation material for public meetings;
• Providing technical assistance and support on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policy and regulations;
• Assisting with erosion control plans and stormwater management plans;
• Developing pedestrian facility and compensatory wetland mitigation designs;
• Developing recommendations and plans for site design and landscape development projects;
• Preparing maps, plans, estimates and project specifications;
• Providing technical assistance and advice to project staff regarding erosion control, vegetation management, plant selection, topography, grading, drainage, and accessibility requirements;
• Analyzing and researching environmental issues affecting the State transportation projects; gathering data, writing reports, and making recommendations to management;
• Assisting in environmental processes related to federal, State and local regulations and requirements;
• Reviewing and/or preparing landscape architecture/environmental documentation, permits, guidance, training, official issuances and correspondence;
• Utilizing various software tools, such as MicroStation and Arc-GIS.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the New York State Department of Transportation response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
