Minimum Qualifications Legal Assistant 1: Reachable for appointment on current Civil Service eligible list used for filling this title, or one year of permanent competitive class service as a Legal Assistant 1; or one year of permanent competitive class service in a title eligible for transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. * Eligible titles include: Administrative Aide, Office Assistant 3, Secretary 2. *Please Note: To be eligible for transfer from any of these titles, candidates must have either an Associate's degree (or higher) or certificate in a paralegal/legal assistant program from an accredited institution or one approved by the American Bar Association.
Legal Assistant Trainee 1: Reachable on current Civil Service eligible list for this title, or one year of permanent competitive-class service in a title approved by the Department of Civil Service for 70.1 transfer. *Eligible titles include: Assistant Claims Services Representative, Secretary 1 or Office Assistant 2. *Please Note: This is a two-year traineeship leading to the journey level title of Legal Assistant 1, SG-14. During the two-year traineeship, trainees are required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college and one or more courses in writing skills.
Duties Description As a Legal Assistant 1, under the direction of staff attorneys, the incumbent may be responsible for compiling and organizing documentation; preparing and assisting in the preparation of legal documents and forms; ensuring court documents, including judgments, are properly and timely filed; logging information; and preparing correspondence and subpoenas. The incumbent may respond to inquiries and complaints; track cases, ensure that deadlines are met; maintain various calendars and conduct research into legal matters.
