Minimum Qualifications - Open-Competitive: Must have taken and passed the NYS SSA Civil Service exam
- Registration as a Security Guard by the NYS Department of State.
Duties Description - Answers questions and gives directions to visitors to State facilities to assist them in finding appropriate offices and services.
- Questions persons who appear to be loitering, and may order persons without legitimate purposes to leave the premises to prevent or limit loitering.
- Controls access to State facilities and offices by confirming the identity of visitors, and mail and supply couriers, maintaining a visitor log during regular business hours, and operating building security access and surveillance systems.
- Issues employee identification cards, and visitor and vendors passes; and maintains the integrity of such identification systems.
- Operates detection equipment to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas.
- Inspects buildings and facilities to detect potential fire and safety hazards, and reports deficiencies to higher level security personnel or agency management.
- Patrols assigned State facilities and inspect the premises to deter property damage by means of presence, witness, and takes immediate preventive actions, as necessary.
- As directed or prescribed in guidelines or routine, locks doors and windows and closes fire doors and smoke barriers to deter and prevent intrusion, and criminal and accidental loss or damage of State property.
- As directed, may turn lights on or off, or start and shut off equipment to ensure that facilities are ready for use and properly is maintained.
- Escorts or provides assistance to physically handicapped persons to ease their entry into or exit from buildings.
- Responds to calls for assistance from visitors, clients, or employees in handling emergency situations, administers first aid, and summons nurses, doctors, and emergency services to ensure that sick or injured persons receive appropriate care.
- Calls police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons; and may assist in responding to the incident.
- Directs people along designated evacuation routes to safe places to ensure timely evacuation during drills and emergencies.
- May operate fire extinguishers or standpipe hoses to extinguish fires, and assist in the evacuation of State facilities in the event of a fire.
- Prepares written reports of shift activities, including actions taken to report or resolve incidents or problems.
- May operate a motor vehicle to support patrol or security incident response activities.
Additional Comments Special Notes: This is a full time classified appointment. FLSA non-exempt position, that is, eligible for overtime monies.
