Duties Description The Data Analyst supports enterprise analytics, reporting, and research initiatives for the New York State Board of Elections. Working under the direction of the Data Architect, this position is responsible for querying, analyzing, and validating data housed in the agency’s Google BigQuery–based data warehouse.
The Data Analyst produces reports, dashboards, and ad hoc analyses using data sourced from multiple operational systems, including Salesforce applications and ASP.NET / Microsoft SQL–based systems. This role also assists in identifying data anomalies, validating data quality, and supporting research requests from program, legal, and policy staff.
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis & Reporting
• Develop, maintain, and execute SQL queries against Google BigQuery to support operational, analytical, and research needs.
• Produce recurring and ad hoc reports, dashboards, and data extracts for internal stakeholders.
• Support the development of visualizations and analytics using approved reporting tools (e.g., Looker, Tableau, or equivalent).
• Assist in translating business and program questions into analytical queries and meaningful data outputs.
Data Validation & Quality Assurance
• Review data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency across source systems and the data warehouse.
• Assist in identifying data anomalies, outliers, or unexpected trends and escalate findings to the Data Architect.
• Support data reconciliation efforts between Salesforce, ASP.NET / SQL systems, and the data warehouse.
• Participate in testing and validation of new data sources, pipelines, and schema changes.
Research & Analytical Support
• Conduct exploratory data analysis to support policy, compliance, audit, and program research initiatives.
• Document assumptions, methodologies, and limitations associated with analytical outputs.
• Assist in preparing data summaries and analytical findings for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Collaboration & Data Operations
• Work closely with the Data Architect to support data modeling, metadata development, and documentation efforts.
• Coordinate with application teams and IT staff to understand source data structures and business rules.
• Support change management and release activities by validating analytical impacts of data updates.
• Follow established data governance, security, and access control policies.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
• Maintain clear documentation of queries, reports, dashboards, and analytical processes.
• Recommend improvements to reporting efficiency, data usability, and analytical processes.
• Participate in training and knowledge-sharing activities related to data tools and standards.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
• Experience performing data analysis in a relational or analytical database environment.
• Strong proficiency in SQL, including joins, aggregations, and data validation techniques.
• Experience producing reports or dashboards for business or program users.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to clearly communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience working in a regulated, public-sector, or compliance-focused environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience querying Google BigQuery or other cloud-based data warehouse platforms.
• Familiarity with Salesforce data structures and reporting concepts.
• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server–based systems.
• Experience using Looker, Tableau, or similar analytics and visualization tools.
• Exposure to data quality, data governance, or audit-support activities.
• Experience supporting research, compliance, or investigative data requests.
