Duties Description Trailside Museums and Zoo is a 30-acre site located within Bear Mountain State Park. This location includes 15 outdoor animal exhibits, 5 stone buildings, 4 regional nature museum buildings, a stone residential house, 1 mile of paved trail, a historical Revolutionary War site, and a forested area. The facility has native plant species gardens among other landscaping features.
Under the direction of the Trades Generalist, SG-12 at Trailside Museums and Zoo, the selected candidate will perform duties related to maintenance and repair of the grounds and buildings. This position also involves working in a zoo environment where animals are present. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Perform upkeep of grounds, including the operation and basic maintenance of hand and power tools (line trimmers, mowers, etc.).
• Perform snow removal by hand shoveling and operating a snowblower and tractor plow.
• Clear sites, prepare them for planting, and plant seeds, trees, shrubbery, and flowers.
• Complete maintenance tasks including cleaning restrooms and picking up litter.
• Make repairs to a variety of structures and buildings.
• Paint interior and exterior surfaces.
• Use and maintain tools and equipment properly.
• Utilizes proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) during work tasks.
• This position involves physically demanding work outdoors on uneven and steep terrain in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time. This includes carrying and moving tools, materials, and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Read and understand written instructions and material.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner under stressful conditions.
• Adheres to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• An interest in the preservation of the natural world and historic sites is preferred but not required.
