Duties Description About NYS ITS
New York State ITS is the centralized technology organization driving enterprise technology transformation across New York State agencies. ITS focuses on modernizing applications, enabling cloud adoption, and delivering secure, scalable, and citizen-centric digital solutions.
Role Overview
NYS ITS is seeking highly motivated Technology Development Interns to support application development, integrations, and digital solution initiatives. This role focuses on building internal tools, modern web applications, be part of HESC dedicated support team to be part of multi-year modernization journey and leveraging AI-powered tools while working within cloud-first environments.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop and enhance front-end web applications using modern frameworks (React, Angular, or similar)
• Build and maintain internal tools and rapid applications to improve operational efficiency
• Assist in API development and system integrations (on-prem to cloud and cloud-to-cloud)
• Support development and deployment of solutions in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI)
• Contribute to cloud-native development practices, including containerization, serverless, or managed services (as applicable)
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., code assistants, automation tools) to accelerate development and improve productivity
• Collaborate with business teams to identify opportunities to digitize manual processes and implement solutions
• Participate in Agile development practices, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives
• Use tools like JIRA/Confluence for tracking work, documentation, and collaboration
• Support testing, debugging, and deployment of applications
• (Nice to have) Exposure to mobile application development concepts or frameworks
• knowledge and experience in Java / Adv Java/scripting languages
Technical Skills (Preferred)
• Experience in front-end development (JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, Angular, or similar)
• Knowledge of backend development and APIs (Node.js, .NET, Java, or Python)
• Strong understanding or hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure)
• Exposure to cloud-native architectures, including microservices, serverless, or container-based development
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices is a plus
• Familiarity with AI development tools / code assistants
• Basic knowledge of databases and SQL
• Experience with Agile methodologies and tools like JIRA
• (Preferred) Cloud certifications or coursework in AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI but deep knowledge in mentioned cloud solutions is highly desirable.
• (Nice to have) Exposure to mobile app development (Flutter, React Native, or similar)
Qualifications
• Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
• Prior technology development experience would be highly valuable
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Ability to learn quickly and work in a collaborative environment
• Interest in building scalable, cloud-enabled, user-centric digital solutions

Ideal Candidate

Minimum Qualifications • Must be a US citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must be currently attending a New York State college, university or graduate program, or be a resident of New York State attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State
• Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year college or university (completion of one year’s worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students) OR currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
• Must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent to a C.
Additional Comments ITS will not offer permanent employment to any candidate unless the candidate provides documentation that they are authorized to accept work in the United States on a permanent basis. This position can be part time or full time.
