Duties Description -Supervise Regional Mechanics

-Coordinate training opportunities for mechanics with SUNY.

-Supervise maintenance of vehicles and motorized equipment, i.e., enter repair order on MMS; ensuring fleet/equipment is roadworthy and safe; coordinate all outside repairs; respond to emergency towing needs; responsible for DMV inspection machines; ensure NYS Inspector licenses are current; keep MSDS book updated; responsible for bulk storage of waste oil and recycling program

-Inventory control of vehicles and motorized equipment in the region

-Fleet coordination, i.e., coordination of pool vehicles; management of EZ passes, license plates and vehicle registrations; manage fleet gas cards and supervisor equipment cards; receive all new vehicles and equipment; place IDs and tags on all new equipment; input regarding new vehicle replacement

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

To be eligible for appointment under NY HELPS, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications below:

Promotion:

You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), Motor Equipment Mechanic or Construction Equipment Mechanic.

Open Competitive:

One year of experience supervising staff engaged in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of gasoline and/or diesel-powered motor equipment, including passenger vehicles, construction and heavy equipment, freight and other commercial cargo vehicles, self-propelled off-road equipment, and non-self-propelled motor equipment.

Candidates may also be eligible via the following:

Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or

Reinstatement - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis.
or

Transfer Eligible- One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 12 or higher and

eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of appointment with appropriate endorsements and no air brake restriction.
Will be subject to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA) of 1991, which requires employee testing for drug and alcohol abuse.
Must obtain tow truck endorsement as additional requirement of CDL.
