Duties Description The Professional Engineer (PE) 1 (Environmental) will assist the program manager of the drinking water and engineering program in the Geneva District Office which provides Environmental Health Services for Ontario, Wayne and Yates Counties. This incumbent will aid the Geneva District Office by completing plan reviews of drinking water systems, realty subdivisions, and swimming pools. They will also conduct sanitary surveys of public water systems, provide technical assistance to staff and the public, and issue violations/enforcement actions to noncompliant facilities. The PE 1 (Environmental) will be responsible for enforcing new, complex regulations for emerging contaminants, such as Per- and Polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), lead, and Harmful Algae Blooms. The District Office’s water program currently regulates over 200 public water systems and reviews approximately 240 sets of plans each year. The PE 1 (Environmental) is needed to assist with managing this program and engineering plan submission approval.

Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS Minimum Qualifications:

New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below;* OR a New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration AND one year of full-time engineering experience in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering.

*Qualifying degrees: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Paper Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Soil and Water Resources Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.

Transfer or Reassignment: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent-permanent status as a Professional Engineer 1 (Environmental), Grade 24, OR a New York State employee with one year of permanent or contingent-permanent competitive service in a title eligible for transfer to a Professional Engineer 1 (Environment), Grade 24.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will be a licensed engineer with experience in drinking water treatment, source water protection, environmental engineering, and/or environmental health. They will have knowledge and understanding of State and federal drinking water standards; possess excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills with attention to detail; have experience with water supplies, spray ground, swimming pools, and realty subdivisions; and will have familiarity with regulations for drinking water, swimming pool, emerging contaminants, Per- and Polyfluorinated substances (PFAS), lead, and harmful algae blooms.
