Duties Description The Statewide Financial System (SFS) is New York State’s enterprise financial system that supports agency business processes and serves as the State’s accounting system of record. Supporting approximately 80 State agencies, SFS processes over $100 billion in payments on an annual basis, and strives to continually ensure system performance, reliability and availability, safeguard the integrity of the data contained within SFS, and maximize use of SFS functionality for the greatest benefit of NYS government.
We are seeking a versatile and forward-thinking IT professional to support both current infrastructure and future cloud initiatives. This role will initially focus on providing backup support for existing systems administration and performing Linux administration duties. Over time, the position will evolve into a cloud-focused role as the organization transitions to a cloud-based environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
Exadata Administration
• Oversee and maintain Exadata infrastructure, including Linux-based compute and cell nodes.
• Apply and test Oracle Quarterly Full Stack Patches; coordinate patching across bureaus.
• Troubleshoot hardware/software issues; liaise with Oracle Platinum Support.
• Implement and manage Exadata security, monitoring, and auditing processes.
• Document configurations, installations, and procedures specific to SFS.
• Collaborate with internal teams and Oracle to plan Exadata reconfigurations and deployments.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Network & Security:
• Configure and manage VCNs, subnets, gateways, and DNS across segmented environments.
• Apply security best practices via network security groups and firewalls.
• Leverage OCI tools (e.g., VTAPs, flow logs, path analyzer) to troubleshoot and optimize traffic.
• Set up and manage load balancers, WAFs, and intrusion prevention tools.
Linux & Compute Administration:
• Assist DBA/SWADM teams with Linux firewall setup, troubleshooting, and email delivery.
• Standardize instance configuration using Ansible, cloud-init, and custom images.
• Register and maintain compute instances in Vulnerability Scanning and OS Management Hub.
• Implement and manage autoscaling via instance pools.
Cloud Architecture & Automation:
• Champion infrastructure automation using Terraform, OCI CLI, and APIs.
• Collaborate on OCI Cloud posture and cost optimization tools (Cloud Guard, Cloud Advisor).
• Recommend and implement new OCI features and services.
• Develop automated cloud event responses with application teams.
• Support secure remote access through Bastions and NFS mount targets.
Minimum Qualifications This position is open to NYS employees with one year
permanent, competitive service as an Information Technology
Specialist 4, G-25, or in a title deemed eligible for transfer under
Section 70.1 or 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. This transfer
cannot be a second, consecutive transfer resulting in an
advancement of more than two grades. In order to qualify for a
Section 70.1 transfer, candidates must have one year of
permanent, competitive service in a qualifying title such as
Information Technology Specialist 4 (Database), G-25 and
Information Technology Specialist 4 (Systems Programmer), G-
25. In order to qualify for a Section 52.6 transfer, candidates
must have one year of permanent, competitive service in a
qualifying administrative title such as Assistant Director of
Financial Administration 1, G-25; Project Manager 2, G-25; and
Supervisor Administrative Analysis, G-25. Candidates reachable
on the eligible list will be considered through canvass and need
not apply.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to learn new technologies and processes quickly.
• Strong skills in operating system scripting.
• Understanding of software product and operating system architecture.
• Understanding of networking concepts.
• Ability to set realistic goals and balance multiple priorities.
• Flexibility to perform assignments off-hours when necessary to maintain SFS system availability.
• Ability to provide technical assistance and guidance to a team of internal and external resources.
• Ability to work collaboratively across project teams.
• Ability to implement work and deliverables under tight timelines.
• Five years of experience as a software administrator.
• Technical lead experience in a technical environment.
• OCI certifications are a plus.
• OCI Cloud experience is a plus.
