Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title when it is administered. Employees appointed provisionally must be reachable on the resulting eligible list for that title or their employment in the position will end.

The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:

Either 1. an associate’s degree in an engineering or technology curriculum which includes or is supplemented by at least 15 credit hours in electronics or electricity;*

Or 2. two years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems;

Or 3. four years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of commercial, industrial or military electronic/electrical integrated system components. Experience must have included programming of programmable logic controllers (PLC’s).

* Degree or college credit must have been awarded by a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the NYS Education Department as following acceptable educational practices. Degrees from outside the United States must be independently verified for equivalency.

Candidate must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Additionally, within three (3) months of appointment, candidate must obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL permit or license. Failure to do so will result in termination. Candidate must obtain a valid NYS Class B CDL License with no air brake restriction within the first twelve (12) months of appointment. Failure to do so will result in termination. Candidate will also be required to pass a pre-employment physical and also may be subject to periodic reassessments of physical ability. Candidate will be required to participate in substance abuse testing.

Duties Description As a Traffic Systems Technician 1, you would troubleshoot and repair traffic signal equipment, state-of-the-art Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and communications equipment; program traffic signal controllers; inspect traffic signal systems; perform major modifications; prepare legal documents which define the operations of traffic control devices; review and modify design plans; maintain a database of repair records and equipment condition; perform emergency repair of traffic control and ITS devices and equipment. Stand-by and overtime availability is required and candidate will be expected to respond “after hours” for service and repair to callouts. Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
