Minimum Qualifications The New York State Athletic Commission (SAC) is authorized to regulate professional boxing and wrestling contests, matches, and exhibitions within the state of New York pursuant to Title 25 of the Unconsolidated Laws. Comprised of three members appointed by the Governor, in addition to a physician, a Medical Advisory Board, and staff, SAC administers licenses, enforces rules and regulations, and ensures that medical and safety standards are being met. It provides training seminars for referees, judges, and inspectors, oversees hundreds of events annually across the state, and is committed to promoting and maintaining the health, safety and integrity of its regulated athletic activities. In addition, Governor Cuomo’s proposed 2016 Executive Budget expands the jurisdiction of the SAC to provide for the legalization and regulation of mixed martial arts (MMA) matches and exhibitions within the State of New York.

The Department of State is seeking qualified candidates for the temporary position of Project Coordinator for the New York State Athletic Commission to assist in building the organizational structure and capacity to regulate MMA. The hiring for this position is contingent upon enactment of legislation authorizing MMA.
A minimum of five years of professional experience related to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Experience working with another State Commission, a promoter of MMA events and/or a television network that regularly produces MMA events is preferred. The individual should also have strong computer skills, writing skills and interpersonal skills, and should have a broad base of contacts in the MMA industry.

Duties Description Under the direction of the Executive Director of the State Athletic Commission, the incumbent will assist the New York State Athletic Commission in creating the appropriate infrastructure in order to fulfill its proposed oversight function so that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will operate safely, efficiently and professionally. Toward that end, the individual must have broad experience in the regulation of MMA to assist in the establishment of MMA rules, to recruit competent officials, to recruit event inspectors and other staff, to help create an operations manual for the oversight of MMA, and to help address the system needs of the Athletic Commission in regulating the sport.
