Duties Description Under the supervision of the Park Supervisor 2 G-14, or designee, the incumbent will be assigned to Cayuga Lake State Park and will perform journey-level work in carpentry.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Perform routine, journey-level carpentry tasks, including framing, finish work, drywall installation, roofing, masonry, window and door installation, and additional construction activities.
• Supervise, train, and monitor the daily carpentry activities of permanent and seasonal staff, ensuring tasks are completed according to safety policies, building codes, and procedures.
• Plan and lay out work, including preparing materials lists, placing orders, and ensuring compliance with New York State purchasing guidelines.
• Read and interpret blueprints.
• Measure and cut materials.
• Utilize and perform routine preventative maintenance on hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
• Operate park machinery, including tractors and various attachments, backhoes, skid steers, plow trucks, trenchers, and excavators.
• Inspect, clean, prep, stain, stack, and transport new and old lumber.
• Build and install furniture, cabinets, signs, and frames.
• Mass produce items such as tables, benches, bench slats, etc.
• Lay out, assemble, and inspect scaffolding.
• Maintain material trackers, daily activity reports, facility and equipment inspection reports, and other required records.
• Provide excellent customer service and answer questions from park patrons.
• Assist in emergency response functions as assigned.
Although the work of the position is periodically inspected by the Park Manager, the incumbent is expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a craftsperson.
Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience** in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services;
OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
**If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor up to 40 lbs.
• Must have working knowledge of the safety procedures, code compliance, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade.
