Duties Description The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is a dedicated research facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) located on the grounds of Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, NY. NKI is affiliated with the New York University Langone Medical Center (NYULMC), located in midtown Manhattan. Applications are currently being invited for a full-time Research Scientist 4 position within NKI’s Center for Division of Laboratory Animal Resources.
The Research Scientist 4 in this position will function as Animal Facility Manager and will provide support to the DLAR Attending Veterinarian/Director to run the animal care and use program, maintain AAALAC accreditation standards, and oversee all the daily operations. Will work closely with the Supervisor of Veterinary Services and Quality Assurance to maintain health and welfare of research colonies at NKI.
Daily Responsibilities
• Managing the staff of lab animal care technicians.
• Responsible for making sure all necessary supplies for facility daily needs are in stock.
• Under supervision of Attending Veterinarian, will work with outside vendors and NKI maintenance staff for continuous improvement of facility equipment, utilities and infrastructure.
• With support of Attending Veterinarian, will also organize study sessions for DLAR Staff to receive education, research knowledge and professional development.
Administrative duties
• Responsible for Daily Time and Attendance for RFMH and NYS DLAR Staff, approving bi-weekly Payroll on OTL, approving monthly payroll on ATARS and coordinating Human Resources.
• Review and approve time off request as per Facility needs.
• Manage DLAR staff.
• Work with NKI Nurse to ensure Occupational Health and Safety Program is being followed.
• Responsible for coordinating with Business office and HR to ensure new DLAR job postings are placed on iSolve Talent Acquisition system, review candidate submission, conduct interviews, update HR and assist new hires for on boarding processes. Provide Facility Tour for new Research Lab members.
• In coordination with business office and Director of DLAR, Manager will be responsible for Annual Animal Facility Budget.
• Involvement in Capital Projects related to facility improvements
• Appointed to serve as a member of the IACUC and other NKI support committees as needed to maintain compliance with all regulations related to the use of animals in research.
• Review and respond to all email communication.
• Prepare and distribute Weekly Schedule.
Facility Maintenance Duties
• Oversee daily maintenance of facility equipment, utilities and infrastructure.
• Place Work Orders as needed based on feedback from both DLAR Staff and Research Labs. Follow up with Maintenance to ensure work is done.
• Report adverse environmental conditions to Maintenance and adjust housing conditions and location for all research colonies as needed.
• Attend Monthly Facility Meetings with Administration and Senior Management
• Daily communication with Attending Vet / DLAR Director
Staff
• Develop a program to provide opportunity for Staff member to receive AALAS Certifications.
• Provide training to new DLAR members for animal care and husbandry duties.
• Provide initial introduction to NKI to Research Lab members and provide further instruction on technical procedures as needed.
Research Labs
• Assess space needs and provide for Research Projects
• Plan and assign usage of shared equipment.
• Train DLAR Staff on each specific Lab’s colony management instructions.
• Assist and participate to train, monitor, and support IACUC approved research studies as needed.
Minimum Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum: bachelor’s degree and five years of professional research experience** in an appropriate field.
Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
Preferred: Master’s degree or higher in biotechnology, business, or animal science/ or Certification as laboratory Animal Manager (CMAR) with at least 5 years’ experience managing a research animal care and use program.

This position is eligible for a Downstate Adjustment of $4,000.
