Duties Description As a Teaching Assistant, you would, under the general supervision of a fully qualified teacher, perform duties related to providing direct instructional service to students. Some of these duties would include, but not be limited to: utilizing suggested techniques and lesson plans, tests and teaching aids developed by a fully qualified teacher, instruct learners individually or in groups for the purpose of conveying specific and limited subject matter; reinforce subject matter previously taught by a teacher by guiding pupils through a prescribed and frequently repetitive learning exercise; administer, proctor, and correct tests; prepare training aids and operate audiovisual and testing equipment; maintain group control in the class; accompany learners on field trips or on special activities.

Minimum Qualifications Candidates from outside or within State Service can be considered for hire under the Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement – Statewide (NY HELPS) program if they meet any of the following:

Possess Current Level III Teaching Assistant Certificate or a current Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant Certificate issued by the New York State Education Department.

OR

Candidates from outside or within State Service can be considered for a competitive class appointment if they are reachable on a current Teacher eligible list.

OR

Candidates from within State Service can be considered for a competitive class appointment if they have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
