Our lifeguards are a vital asset to the New York State Parks system, each year protecting more than 25 million swimmers statewide. If you are at least 17 years old, a strong swimmer, love the outdoors, and have a desire to help your community all while working in some of the most scenic locations in the state, we strongly encourage you to apply.*
Lifeguard positions are available statewide and all candidates must qualify annually, including returning guards.

Lifeguard is a full-time or part-time, temporary position that assists the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in ensuring the safety of patrons swimming at park’s beaches and pool.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Provide water surveillance, guard pool areas, protect swimmers
• Initiate and respond to swimmer-in-distress signals, perform resuscitation and other First Aide procedures
• Evacuate swimming area in response to dangerous or emergency situations.
• Performing other related duties as assigned.

Preferred qualifications:
Must be 17 years old by June 8, 2025, and must have at least 20/70 uncorrected or 20/40 corrected vision in each eye.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must be available to work weekends and holidays
• Must be at least 17 years old by June 8, 2025
• Must possess the ability to work independently or on a team
• Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time outside in the sun and run, jump and swim.
• Must be willing to keep current on all mandated safety trainings, including First Aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer or equivalent.
