Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Eligible List Appointment: Candidates who are reachable on the Licensed Practical Nurse eligible list may be considered for appointment. To qualify for the eligible list, candidates must possess a license and current registration to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State OR possess a limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State** OR be eligible for a limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State***.
Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-09 or higher deemed eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law AND possess a license and current registration to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State OR possess a limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State** OR be eligible for a limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State***.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to applicants who have experience working with deaf students and/or the ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking applicants to fill a Licensed Practical Nurse position. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the health care of the students at the School. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide nursing intervention services for day and residential students;
• Communicate appropriately with students, staff, parents, and other health agencies with tact, confidence, and in accordance with school procedures;
• Maintain accurate documentation of health records and reports on each student;
• Maintain inventory standards for medicine, controlled drugs, and narcotics;
• Treat problems from standing orders; and
• Provide supportive and restorative care.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of licensure and degree and/or transcripts will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. This will be a permanent, 10-month appointment with the potential of working during the summer school session.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $38,977 ($46,772 prorated to 10 months) with annual performance advances.
**Employees who have not obtained their license within one (1) year of the date of issuance of the limited permit will be subject to termination.
***Candidates with an application on file for a limited permit to practice as a Practical Nurse in New York State must be appointed immediately following graduation from an approved school of practical nursing in New York State. Employees who have not obtained their license within one (1) year of the date of issuance of the limited permit will be subject to termination.
