Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications As per Civil Service standards, but particularly four years of full time experience under a journeyman, which provided training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training or training guided by the completion of technical courses may be substituted on a year for year basis. Applicant must possess and keep a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. The applicant must have and keep a motor vehicle record which free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Must possess EPA certification to recover refrigerants - Universal certification required. Computer literate: Microsoft office, familiar with the operation and the technology of a Building Management System. Must be able to speak, read, write and understand English.
Duties Description As per Civil Service standards, but particularly:
Basic duties include the installation and maintenance of complex HVAC systems that are essential to a building's operation. Install, operate, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Installs, maintains and repairs computerized electronic pneumatic and digital direct control devices related to HVAC and heat control. Install or repair HVAC system automation components for a DDC system. During installation, the mechanic is responsible for properly installing water lines, air ducts, vents, motors, compressors, evaporators, piping, and other components.
May also be responsible for connecting electrical wiring and fixtures during the installation process. Must be able to route wires or pipes through existing construction. Performs brazing, soldering, pipe-fitting, welding and fabrication. Plumbing, soldering up to 4" copper pipe, brazing a/c system, arc welding. After installation, ensure the system is operating properly by conducting a series of equipment tests. Replace filters, ducts, and other components that collect dust and other waste during use. Responsible for disposing and recycling any chemical byproducts of the HVAC system such as refrigerants. Operates a variety of equipment such as hand tools, lap top computers and diagnostic hardware to perform work. Operates various measuring, diagnostic and testing instruments. Maintains electronic/pneumatic testing equipment.
Requisitions material and supplies from stockroom, calls vendors to discuss needs for parts and supplies, and recommends purchases and suppliers. Reads complex blueprints, piping, sketches, schematics and wiring diagrams. Knowledge of fan and pump characteristics and how to measure them. Work may take place in cramped, dirty/dusty, cold, or hot conditions. Safety must be considered in dealing with electricity, flammable fuel lines and CFC chemicals. Respiratory precautions may also be taken because of exposure to dust, refrigeration chemicals and possible asbestos in older buildings.
