Job Specifics
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Facilities and Business Services is seeking a candidate for a Maintenance Assistant position for the Cultural Education Center Building (CEC). As a Maintenance Assistant you will perform routine, repetitive semi-skilled maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in one or a combination of the mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Perform a variety of tasks utilizing power and manual hand tools including but not limited to saws, hammers, drills, sanders, and stationary power tools;
• Perform routine repetitive semi-skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry and other facility services and equipment;
• Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, collection/pick-up of trash and other obstructions from the building and surrounding areas;
• Perform general facilities maintenance such as cleaning common areas, offices and restrooms, painting and moving furniture;
• Troubleshoot facility, equipment and/or machinery problems and work to resolve concerns in a timely manner;
• Ability to work comfortably at heights such as climbing ladders, working on scaffolds, platforms, and lifts. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs.);
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle, other motorized equipment, and a variety of light mechanized construction equipment. Ability to operate small equipment including manual/electrical pallet jack;
• Ability to follow written and verbal directions, ensure follow through on assignments; and
• Ability to get along with and interact well with different groups of people, including co-workers, management, both Federal and State personnel and the public utilizing the facility.
Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.
Verification of experience and coursework will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Verification of a valid New York State driver’s license will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Candidates are required to possess a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of hire. Continued employment as a Maintenance Assistant is dependent upon maintaining a valid New York State driver’s license. Failure to maintain a valid New York State driver’s license will result in removal from employment. Incumbents of this position are considered essential personnel.
The work schedule for this position includes hours of Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00PM.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $52,413 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
