Job Specifics

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a 2nd Shift Child Care Aide 1 position in the New York State School for the Deaf. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Caring for students in a residential education program by assisting and motivating students to attend to their personal daily living needs and to further develop those educational, nutritional, social and personal skills to achieve the highest possible level of independent functioning in society;
• Utilizing a total communication approach to language development in the presence of hearing-impaired individuals by using both sign language and voice;
• Performing daily checks to ensure that each student has his/her hearing aid, cochlear implants, and/or glasses;
• Assisting students during mealtimes by providing supervision, encouraging students to eat balanced meals, converse with students during mealtimes, and helping to create a relaxed, family-type atmosphere; and
• Preventing child abuse and maltreatment by attending all staff trainings, carrying out responsibilities as a mandated reporter of child abuse and maltreatment, and under the direction of a Child Care Aide 2, use approved techniques to manage students, and report to supervisors, as required, regarding occurrences giving rise to concerns involved children in your care.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively with students and staff, follow written and spoken instructions, and relate to the students being supervised. Incumbents must be in good health, good physical condition, and able to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children and participate in physical activities such as swimming.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to applicants who have:
• Experience working with deaf students; and
• The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent 12-month appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.

Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicants’ fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System.

The work schedule for this position includes hours Monday through Thursday, 1:00 pm-11:00 pm. The incumbent of this position may be required to cover alternate shifts on an as needed basis, depending on the needs of the facility.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $52,413 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts
