Job Specifics

Duties Description Trailside Museums and Zoo is a 30-acre site located within Bear Mountain State Park. This location includes outdoor animal exhibits, small museums, 1 mile of paved trail, a historical Revolutionary War site, and a forested area. The facility has native plant species gardens among other landscape features. Trailside is located on a short section of the Appalachian Trail overlooking the Hudson River. Under the direction of the Supervisor Trailside Museum & Zoo, SG-18, the selected candidate’s duties will include, but not be limited to:

• Assist in all administrative functions including handling incoming and outgoing communications, office supplies, accounts payable/receivable, credit card reconciliation, banking deposits, payroll data entry, and staff onboarding.
• Maintain and update staff schedules and calendars, submit maintenance work requests, and manage emergency contact and radio call lists.
• Oversee inventory and ordering of apparel and first aid supplies; update and distribute annual safety documents.
• Coordinate volunteer programs by processing applications, interviewing candidates, maintaining volunteer resources and schedules, conducting recruitment outreach, and organizing training sessions and event staffing.
• Support public relations efforts by maintaining current maps and community information, distributing event notices, managing community calendars, and updating social media accounts and websites.
• Assist with fundraising campaigns including Adopt an Animal, Giving Tuesday, Holiday Wish List, and managing fundraising accounts.
• Perform general zoo tasks such as assisting with opening and closing, providing interpretation to visitors, maintaining office cleanliness, and snow removal as needed.
• Develop and manage trail and seasonal signage content in collaboration with sign shop.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• Work effectively independently and in a team setting and demonstrate flexibility in tasks and schedules.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be available to work weekends, holidays.
• Must be proficient in operating computers.
• Must be able to perform light to medium physical labor.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including winter conditions and extreme heat.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required.
• Experience in office management, public relations, marketing, or volunteer coordination is preferred but not required.
• An interest in the preservation of the natural world and historic sites is preferred but not required.
