Job Specifics

Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) Finger Lakes Environmental Stewardship Team is filling two Parks and Recreation Aide 5, SG-NS, positions to serve as Environmental Stewardship Technicians for seasonal, field-based work located at Fair Haven Beach State Park. The technicians will work primarily outdoors during the summer months, dedicating approximately 90% of their time to hands-on habitat restoration and invasive species management. The role is integral to enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities while prioritizing the restoration of critical habitats.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited, to the following:

The key focus of the role is invasive species management in sensitive and rare natural areas. Technicians will conduct manual removal of invasive herbs, shrubs and aquatic plants in terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Technicians will assist licensed pesticide applicators with chemical treatments—applying foliar and cut-stump treatments to manage pale swallow-wort, Japanese knotweed and invasive shrubs in sensitive habitats and park facilities. Staff will monitor invasive species populations using standardized field surveys, GPS mapping, and vegetation assessments.

The technician’s responsibilities include establishing and maintaining suitable nesting and basking areas for spiny softshell turtles by stabilizing sand dunes and managing vegetation. This involves installing temporary fencing, transplanting American beachgrass, and performing invasive species management. Technicians will be responsible for camera trap installation, checks and maintenance in monitoring areas.

The technician will assist in leading volunteer groups during water chestnut removal and dune restoration activities, while coordinating daily with the project lead, maintenance teams, and FORCES volunteers. Data collected through transect and plot-based vegetation surveys will be compiled into progress reports, helping to guide ongoing management and restoration efforts.
