Job Specifics

Duties Description New York State Senator James Sanders, Jr., is seeking applicants to fill the role of Legal Counsel in his Albany office. The New York State Senate Legal Counsel provides essential legal support and advice. This dynamic role involves a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Legal Advice:

•Offering legal guidance to Senate members and staff on legislative matters
•Interpreting laws, regulations, and policies relevant to Senate operations
•Drafting and reviewing legislation
•Assisting in the drafting of bills and resolutions
• Reviewing proposed legislation for legal implications and compliance

Litigation Support:

•Representing the Senate in legal proceedings as necessary
•Coordinating with external legal counsel on complex legal issues
Policy Development:
•Contributing to the development of policies and procedures within the Senate
•Ensuring that Senate practices align with legal standards and best practices
•Preparing materials and briefing Senator and staff on legislation, policy initiatives, and regulatory changes
•Assisting Senator in preparation for public hearings, roundtable discussions, forums and other public meetings and events
•Working with Albany and statewide staff to assist Senators in drafting and analyzing legislation and policy
•Meeting with and building relationships with relevant stakeholders, advocacy, and constituency groups

Minimum Qualifications To be considered, you must have:

•A Juris Doctor degree
•Three to five years of legal counsel and research experience
•Strong writing and oratory communication skills

Additionally, all candidates are expected to live and work in the Albany Capital Region in New York. Nights and weekends are required, as necessary.

Additional Comments Salary range is $65,000 to $75,000, commensurate with experience.
