Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications for Provisional or Non-Competitive Appointments:
Two years of experience in mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson or completion of an appropriate two year technical school course/program.

In accordance with union contract, this position is anticipated to be filled by an eligible DEC - CSEA Operations Services Unit employee who meets the minimum qualifications. Two years of experience in mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson or completion of an appropriate two year technical school course.
Duties Description This Maintenance Assistant (Mechanic) will perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair and related activities as assigned in the motor equipment and mechanical trades including but not limited to the following:
• Performs routine tasks associated with maintaining wildland fire equipment including wildland fire engines, fire trailers, chainsaws, portable pumps and hose maintenance.
• Performs routine tasks in the installation, repair, cleaning and maintenance of automotive and mechanical equipment. This may Include service and adjustment of emergency lighting on vehicles, mobile radio wiring harnesses, replacement of wheel bearings on trailers, washing vehicles, etc.
• Performs routine tasks in the repair, maintenance and servicing of emergency recreational vehicles such as ATV's, UTV's, and snowmobiles.
• Drive department vehicles including sedans, pickups and cargo vans as directed to perform routine task to support the facility.
• May perform building/grounds maintenance.
• May perform routine inventory of supplies and equipment.
• May occasionally operate a forklift and front-end loader.
• May perform welding using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment in the repair of damaged equipment.
• Employee may occasionally be required to work overtime during periods of high work load.
• As assigned, Maintenance Assistant (Mechanic) may function as a lead worker over a small seasonal maintenance crew.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Overtime may be required. Selected candidate must undergo a background investigation prior to appointment.
