Job Specifics
Duties Description Reporting to a Chief Environmental Conservation Police Officer, or other higher ranking police officer, functions as a field supervisor for all regional police activities of BECI; supervises Environmental Conservation Investigators 1 and Environmental Conservation Police Officers, and manages the most complex and sensitive cases; may be required to assume the duties and responsibilities of a Chief Environmental Conservation Police Officer (CECPO) in their absence.
In addition to performing the duties listed above, incumbents supervise the day-to-day investigative activities of assigned subordinates.
As directed, assigns investigative projects to subordinates, and provides guidance on methodologies, tactics and limitations.
Monitors the progress of investigations, ensuring that progress is made and information is acted upon on a timely manner.
As directed, redirects the thrust of investigations, and recommends solutions to problems.
Recommends the termination of futile investigations.
Assists the CECPO in progressing complex and sensitive investigations:
Develops innovative strategies to advance novel investigations.
Gathers and analyzes data from a variety of sources; and develops sources of information, which may assist in resolving investigative problems.
Assembles evidence pertaining to special cases, and coordinates work with other agency divisions.
Works with regional and technical staff in the development of training programs for subordinate investigators, including training in the identification of hazardous waste, and the preparation and protection of evidence.
Meets with various local groups, enforcement agencies and prosecutor’s offices to supplement their understanding of the role of BECI, and to enhance the flow of information concerning criminal offenses of the hazardous waste laws and other major environmental conservation crimes.
Assumes the duties of the CECPO in his/her absence, as required.
Minimum Qualifications Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis
or
Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 17 or higher and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 or 52.6.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be available for emergency response.
Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.
Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.
