Job Specifics
Duties Description Under the direction of Trades Generalist, SG-12 at Trailside Museums and Zoo, the selected candidate’s duties will include, but not be limited to:
• Assist in carrying out maintenance schedules and operations at Trailside Museums and Zoo in Bear Mountain and at the Trailside facilities in Harriman State Park.
• Perform routine maintenance using a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including mowers, chainsaws, snow blowers, tractors, power saws, backpack blowers, and line trimmers.
• Perform building and grounds maintenance including trash and recycling collection, daily cleaning of restrooms and museum buildings.
• Assist skilled tradespersons in performing maintenance activities including painting, trail repairs, basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and other repairs.
• Assign, supervise, train, and report on the work of lower-level maintenance employees.
• Assist with daily facility operations, including the opening and closing of sites and museums, performing crowd management, interacting with the visiting public, anticipating and remedying safety concerns, and setting up and breaking down during special events.
• Follow a preventative maintenance plan and perform seasonal duties such as snow shoveling, operating snowblower/salt spreader, maintaining the sprinkler system, and performing poison ivy control measures.
• Adhere to all applicable safety regulations and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• This position involves communicating in writing, as well as reading and comprehending written material.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience* in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;
OR - One year of experience* in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance
OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university**;
OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;
OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
*If verifiable, we will accept and pro-rate part-time and volunteer experience.
**Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Park Worker 3.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor, including ability to lift and move 80 pounds.
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays as needed.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including winter conditions and extreme heat.
• Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time and navigate difficult terrain.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
Location Pay:
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($42,641) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($52,413) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The CSEA contracts allow for salary protection for seasonal / hourly employees who are appointed to permanent graded positions with lower hiring rates under certain circumstances. We encourage OPRHP seasonal / hourly applicants to check in with your Regional Business Office Administrator to inquire about the potential impact on your salary. As a permanent graded employee, you will be eligible for regular salary / performance advances (i.e. salary increases).
