Job Specifics

Duties Description DUTIES:
Under the general supervision and direction of the Agency Safety & Health Director 2, the duties of the Agency Safety & Health Representative 1 will include but are not limited to the following:
• Visit and inspect work sites and work zones, including Authority rights of way, for safety and health hazard and compliance issues, and make recommendations for necessary improvements.
• Use accepted industry tools and equipment, perform work-site environmental monitoring.
• Promote employee awareness of safety and health regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Assist in coordinating a comprehensive employee accident and injury prevention program.
• Assist with the development and conducting of safety training programs.
• Serve as liaison to various regulatory agencies.

Minimum Qualifications Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent competitive service as a Safety & Health Inspector, SG-16 and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the NYS Civil Service Law. Or,

Provisional Appointment (Pending Examination):
Current New York State Thruway Authority employee with three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a position allocated to salary grade 8 or higher; and either,
1. one year of experience in the field of occupational safety and health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, fire safety and prevention*, construction safety, or building design relating to fire codes; Or,
2. 30 semester college credits in occupational safety and health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, fire safety and prevention, construction safety, or building design relating to fire codes; Or,
3. successful completion of NYS Firefighter 1 certification.
*Experience related to firefighting (paid and volunteer) is NOT qualifying.

NY HELPS Qualifications:
Four years of experience in the field of occupational safety and health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, construction safety, fire safety and prevention, or building design relating to fire codes.
MQ Substitution: an associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s in a related field degree can substitute for four years of experience
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

ADDITIONAL PAY INFORMATION:
The salary range for this position includes all applicable annual components of pay which are:
Base Pay Range from Hiring Rate $51,809 up to Job Rate $74,011.
Recruitment & Retention Pay: $7,000.
