Job Specifics
Duties Description Ability to perform journey-level work in one trade, and skilled and semiskilled level work in a combination of other trades in the diagnosis and repair of HVAC, Mechanical and Electrical Systems; ability to perform physical tasks including lifting 50 pounds, working from ladders, scaffolds and lifts, work at heights 25'+ and in confined spaces; plan and execute assignments with considerable independence; work overtime as required for emergencies and campus events; ability to work with a computerized maintenance management system; ability to wear a negative pressure respirator, pass a fit test and use other personal protective equipment related to the job duties; ability to determine repairs and replacement of equipment, plan work, organize apprentices and helpers with materials and equipment for projects and maintain stocked inventory of materials required; Valid New York State Driver's license required.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. This position may be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment. Candidates may be expected to be qualified to use negative pressure respirators. Valid New York State driver's license required.
OPERATING NEEDS:
Ability to perform journey-level work in one trade, and skilled and semiskilled level work in a combination of other trades in the diagnosis and repair of mechanical systems large and small, internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, components of larger comprehensive systems including emergency equipment for the protection of vital building infrastructure (generators, fire protective components and overhead doors); Ability to understand and estimate labor and materials costs, provide information on replacement parts and components to meet project and service needs. Ability to interpret diagrams, Understand and execute written and verbal instructions, working independently meeting the prescribed specification of projects; Ability to use tools associated with diagnostic testing and repairs of low voltage controls of electromechanical equipment and advanced hydraulics; ability to perform mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs and troubleshooting on a variety of campus equipment including utility vehicles, snowplows, salters, shop equipment, generators, pumps, control circuits on mechanical systems; overhead doors and powered athletic equipment; ability and understanding of concepts of safe rigging and lifting; handling of heavy items that require the use cranes, gantries and other heavy equipment in the overhead movement and transport of heavy items; ability to operate and use aerial lifts, ladders and scaffolds to work at height for a variety of duties including banner installations and setting up of elevated bleachers and other equipment; ability to understand the concepts of and performing preplanned scheduled preventive maintenance; lubrication and inspections to prevent future disruptions of service and equipment downtime. Basic knowledge and understanding of typical building construction techniques and common building materials; cutting, use of adhesives, wood / lumber, metal and concrete, working with drywall and masonry fasteners. Ability to identify hazards and contaminants in a work area. Repair defective hydraulic hoses, defective pumps, valves, leaking rams on powered hydraulic systems. Able to identify proper application and cross referencing of parts and fittings as needed and the execution of repair using acceptable trade protocols and procedures; ability to determine the presence of AC power, understanding of lock out tag out safety procedures in and around high voltage equipment. Ability to cut, drill, weld and repair cracked, and broken metal parts as needed; fabricate and repair floorboards, weld metal panels or patch snowplows, frames or other parts of utility vehicles, mowers, body and building HVAC panels, and campus equipment and projects; ability to install steel structural members, door jams, fire doors, hinges, fencing. Ability to weld with MIG, arc/stick welding, and use oxyacetylene torches for cutting; ability to read and interpret metal working specifications, understanding units of measurement associated with different material types, measuring tools and unit conversions as needed to perform basic machining processes and metal cutting including the use of shears and brakes. Ability to properly set up welding equipment for appropriate process being used. Ability and willingness to attend training on new equipment and building systems, work overtime if needed and to be on an emergency call-in list for afterhours emergencies. Ability to use computer based time and attendance software, look up and interpret work orders, add notations to work orders outlining cause and correction and status of completion.
