Job Specifics

Duties Description Trailside Museums and Zoo is a 30-acre site located within Bear Mountain State Park. Trailside strives to encourage people to become acquainted with and interested in the local environment and care for it. It seeks to provide experiences that lead people to understand their connection to the natural world, develop environmental literacy, and stewardship. Trailside is located on a short section the Appalachian Trail overlooking the Hudson River. The trail takes visitors by exhibits of non-releasable native wildlife and small museums.

Trailside’s maintenance department is responsible for 15 outdoor animal exhibits, 1 stone Reptile, Amphibian, and Fish building, 3 stone museum buildings, 3 additional buildings (workshop, Education Building, and Office), public restrooms, 4 regional nature museum buildings located in Harriman State Park, a stone residential house and garage, 1 mile of paved trail, large sections of fencing, a historical Revolutionary War site, and a forested area. The facility has native plant species gardens among other landscaping features.

Under the direction of the Supervisor Trailside Museum & Zoo, SG-18, the Trades Generalist will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks. The incumbent will be responsible for a primary trade in one of the following: plumbing, carpentry, small engine repair, or mechanics. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Assist in structural repair work, including roof work, siding and shingle replacement, door and window repairs, and framing of partitions.
• Under supervision, conduct a variety of maintenance tasks across trades such as plumbing, electrical, and masonry, while assisting with diagnosing issues and interpreting plans, diagrams, and specifications.
• Daily maintenance of equipment, such as greasing and lubricating.
• Manage the internal maintenance request and work order system, ensuring all requests are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
• Follow a preventative maintenance plan for vehicles and equipment, while performing medium to heavy manual labor, including snow and tree removal, using various hand and power tools.
• Supervise and train lower-level staff, ensuring quality work and adherence to instructions.
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions alongside the animal care department to maintain and enhance exhibits.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience* in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
• Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other building crafts.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
• May be required to work weekends, holidays, and/or evening shifts.

Location Pay:

The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($50,425) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($61,548) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).
