Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the selected candidate has a broad range of responsibilities, which includes supporting park programs and various maintenance and operations tasks. This position works collaboratively with park management and staff in a variety of capacities.

The duties of this position will include but are not limited to the following:

• Participate in all aspects of Beach, Campground and Winter Park operations. Includes interacting with patrons, supervising seasonal staff, cleaning and garbage removal, Snack shack operations.

• Ski rental operations, office operations, ski trail grooming and other duties as assigned.

• Nature Center Operations: Operate and participate in education programs in the park including nature center, and guided hikes

• Performing landscaping and horticultural activities utilizing a variety of hand tools and power tools, using green practices. Maintaining native planting beds and performing new plantings. Felling and cleanup of standing hazardous trees and storm damaged trees.

• Maintenance. Using a variety of tools and equipment to perform maintenance on buildings, roads, trails and other infrastructure. Building new trails. Snow plowing and snow removal in winter.

• Operation and maintenance of variety of equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders, gators. Snowplows, snowblowers, mowers and trailers.

• Participate in lost hiker and injured hiker rescues as needed.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Reassignment Qualifications:

Applicants must currently be in a Park Worker 3 position with OPRHP.

Non-Competitive Qualifications:

One year of experience* in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR

One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR

An Associate’s or higher-level degree**, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR

Completion of an appropriate two-year technical/trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

Two years' experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, or recreational facility; OR two years' experience as a trade’s assistant under the supervision of a skilled trades-person, or completion of an appropriate two-year technical/trades school course.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments Operational Needs:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to operate light duty trucks, UTV’s. tractors, trailers snow plows and snowmobiles.
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons.
• Must have the ability to communicate in writing and to read and comprehend written material.
• Must possess experience with Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training or equivalent within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
• Must obtain Class C Water Treatment Operator certification within the probation period.
• Must be available to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
