Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a license AND either a current registration to practice as a Professional Registered Nurse (RN) in New York State OR a limited permit to practice nursing in New York State OR be eligible to enter the examination for such license. Candidates with a limit permit or eligibility to enter the examination must obtain their license within 1 year of appointment. Candidates must have the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.
Duties Description The New York State School for the Blind (NYSSB) in Batavia is seeking to fill a temporary Nurse 1 Substitute position. The NYSSB provides educational and residential services to students who are blind and have additional disabilities. Under the direction of the Nurse Administrator 1, major responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide health care to students in the absence of regular staff;
• Perform clinical rounds;
• Record and administer medications promptly;
• Assess health program for service delivery;
• Observe and record symptoms of illness accurately and objectively;
• Treat problems from standing orders;
• Maintain specific health records and reports on each student; and
• Communicate appropriately with students, direct care staff, parents and other health agencies with tact, confidence and in concert with school procedures.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary, hourly on-call position. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Nurse 1 substitutes are notified by phone when services are needed. Every effort is made to give 24 hour prior notice. Continued employment as a Nurse 1 is dependent upon maintaining a current registration as a professional Registered Nurse in New York State. Failure to maintain this license or eligibility will result in removal from employment.
