Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or related natural sciences field and two years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or related natural sciences and 1 years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will have experience working with bloodborne pathogens and handling blood specimens; experience performing diagnostic infectious disease testing, experience performing nucleic acid extractions, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods ( conventional, real-time and /or droplet digital PCR); experience with next generation sequencing methods and data analysis; experience preparing standard operating procedures and conducting clinical test validation studies; experience using spreadsheets and databases.
Duties Description The Research Scientist 1 will be involved in clinical and public health laboratory functions related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), including clinical testing, surveillance and outbreak investigations. Responsibilities will include processing blood specimens; reviewing and managing specimen data; performing serological and molecular test methods; performing quality assurance tasks and maintaining proper records and documentation. Duties will also include assisting in the development and validation of new laboratory methods; performing troubleshooting and optimization experiments; analyzing experimental data; preparing standard operating procedures; contributing to abstract and manuscript preparation; preparing poster and slide presentations; utilizing computer software and database systems to analyze data and manage specimen repositories and supply inventories. The selected candidate will also be cross-trained by the Diagnostic Immunology laboratory in serologic test methods; maintain competency in all clinical test methods and serve as a resource for surge testing during infectious disease outbreaks.
Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required.
