Minimum Qualifications Graduate Interns: Preferred candidates have completed one year of study in at least one of the following areas: public administration, economics, business administration, public policy or public affairs.

Undergraduate Interns: Preferred candidates have completed course work study in at least one of the following areas: public administration, economics, business administration, public policy or public affairs.

Applicants should possess strong analytical and writing skills, demonstrate an attention to detail, possess good interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. An interest in education finance policy is required.

Duties Description The Education Unit of the Division of the Budget (DOB) is seeking an intern to assist in research and data analysis to inform future special education as well as other educational program proposals. Analyzing policy, legislation, fiscal, and/or programmatic elements of educational programs in New York is a central focus of the Education and Arts Unit.

Responsibilities of the Education Research Assistant:

The intern will assist with analytical and research projects related to programs, such as: preschool and school-age special education, non-public schools, child nutrition, and Federal programs.

One specific project for the intern will be researching how other states deliver and finance preschool special education services and how this compares to New York State. Additional projects may be undertaken in other education programs within the Section's and Unit's purview, as time permits.

During the term of this summer position, the intern will draft briefing materials to summarize key findings and results of these projects. These findings may inform the development of budget recommendations to be included in the 2019-20 Executive Budget.
