Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a master’s degree AND possess New York State permanent or professional certification AND seven years of full-time professional classroom teaching experience, including three years at a managerial level involving curriculum planning, development and assessment activities within an educational program or organization. A Ph.D. in education may be substituted for up to two years of the curriculum planning, development and assessment experience.
Non-qualifying experience: Head teacher, senior teacher, lead teacher or a teacher possessing an administrator certificate without managerial experience is not considered qualifying.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Director, Curriculum Services position in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction. This Office is responsible for developing standards and overseeing professional development initiatives for all subject areas for K-12 students including academic, non-academic and technical subjects. The incumbent of this position will oversee technical assistance and develop standards-based guidance materials to help the field in implementing the NYS Learning Standards. Duties of this position include, but are not limited, to the following:
• Lead the development of policies, strategies and resources to assist school administrators, teachers and parents in understanding and implementing the NYS Learning Standards for academic, non-academic and technical subjects in grades K-12;
• Maintain an ongoing dialogue with policy making groups from school districts to ensure alignment of State and local initiatives in curriculum and instruction;
• Manage vendor activities and responsibilities related to NYS Learning Standards and curricula for quality, timeliness, accuracy and completeness;
• Oversee the training and related workshops to build teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogy in academic, non-academic and technical subjects in grades K-12;
• Partner with University of the State of New York member institutions to provide a variety of professional development opportunities related to the NYS Learning Standards;
• Oversee technical assistance provided to school personnel and other stakeholders in academic, non-academic and technical subjects in grades K-12;
• Administer a variety of competitive federal and State grant programs supporting increased student achievement in academic, non-academic and technical subjects in grades K-12;
• Provide content expertise on the development of curriculum, instruction and assessment models in the standard areas;
• Serve as liaison to State and federal organizations on educational policy initiatives and practices;
• Oversee the preparation of professional development materials, grants, contracts, proposed regulatory and policy statements, and informational materials;
• Represent NYS at national and regional conferences devoted to learning standards and/or curricula;
• Work closely with internal NYSED offices, specifically with the Offices of Bilingual Education & World Languages, Special Education and State Assessment; and
• Work in collaboration with external stakeholders and advocacy groups in support of quality instruction.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent non-competitive appointment. This position is in the exempt class and the incumbent will serve at the discretion of the Commissioner of Education. Verification of degree and certification will be required for all candidates. Failure to maintain NYS certification will result in removal from this position.
*Leads to a maximum salary of 146,795 based on annual performance advances.
