Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics, genetics or biology and four years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master’s degree in bioinformatics, genetics or biology and three years of professional post degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a doctorate in the appropriate field and one year of post degree professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in bioinformatics, genetics or biology, plus three years of bioinformatics and laboratory experience in clinical genetics, genomics, or molecular biology; including experience using contemporary software and algorithms for analysis of human genetic data; working with bioinformatics pipelines, including development, clinical assessment, implementation and quality control; design and analysis of gene panels using next generation sequencing; conducting human genetic variant interpretation; conducting clinical testing using molecular and biochemical assays in high-throughput format, including next generation and Sanger sequencing, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and mass spectrometry; working with newborn screening dried blood spots; clinical/diagnostic assay design, setup, optimization and quality control; developing and documenting laboratory procedures; and experience with quality control standards for clinical laboratories. .

Duties Description The Research Scientist 3 will perform bioinformatics and conduct testing for the NYS Newborn Screening Program. The incumbent will develop and implement bioinformatics pipelines that will be used to analyze data from multi-gene panels, analyze and interpret data, and maintain software and data files. Laboratory duties will include conducting routine molecular screening for genetic conditions in newborn dried blood spot samples using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -board based testing, both traditional and next generation sequencing technologies, and mass spectrometry. The incumbent will perform other laboratory procedures related to screening, such as specimen accessioning, strict adherence to proper quality control and quality assurance measures and analyze and interpret newborn screening data. Other assignments will include research, development and optimization of new molecular tests for genetic conditions, and collaboration with other scientist to improve testing procedures.

Additional Comments Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment, and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations. In addition, dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may also be required.
