Minimum Qualifications License to practice medicine in New York State, possession of a valid certificate in pathology from the American Board of Pathology or its equivalent, AND one year post-certification experience in pathology in a capacity directing the work of a hospital laboratory in hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, serology, pathology or parasitology. In addition, candidates must maintain a Certificate of Qualification from NYS Department of Health for areas of pathology in which the OMH Clinical Laboratory performs testing.

Duties Description The OMH Clinical Laboratory is a full service clinical laboratory, performing much of the routine lab work for Office of Mental Health (OMH) facilities. Specimens are collected at each facility, pre-processed and transported via couriers to the OMH Clinical Laboratories. Once testing is complete and results verified, the reports are returned by computer. Testing is performed in the areas of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, bacteriology, serology, and special chemistry.

The Pathologist will be responsible for:

• Monitoring Proficiency Testing results and taking
appropriate corrective actions as necessary.
• Maintaining and enhancing the laboratory’s quality
management program.
• Consultation with OMH facility staff and Clinical
Directors regarding laboratory results.

Additional Comments Background Investigation/Justice Center Review:
Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.

The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is seeking a part-time Pathologist for the Division of Clinical Laboratories, a fully accredited laboratory performing all New York State Office of Mental Health facilities’ laboratory work. The NKI is a facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) located on the grounds of the Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, NY, fifteen miles north of New York City.
