As a Direct Support Assistant Trainee, you would participate in a traineeship ranging from 6 to 15 months depending on your qualifications and your ability to demonstrate competency in certain critical areas of consumer care. The traineeship includes a wide range of learning experiences in the provision of care for individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities. You will be required to successfully complete all mandated trainings. At the successful conclusion of your traineeship, you would advance without further examination to Direct Support Assistant, Salary Grade 9.

Duties Description MAKE A DIFFERENCE, BECOME A DIRECT SUPPORT ASSISTANT.

OPWDD’s priority is the health and safety of the 128,000 individuals statewide with developmental disabilities receiving our support. As a Direct Support Assistant Trainee or Direct Support Assistant, you would help individuals with developmental disabilities lead richer lives. Under supervision, you would provide supports and services which involve advocating for, encouraging, guiding and teaching individuals in expressing personal choice, ensuring community integration, assisting individuals with personal hygiene care, toileting, lifts and transfers, dining, dressing, and meal preparation. You would help individuals to participate in games and recreational programs; coach and encourage individuals to develop daily living skills; and provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. You would work with other staff to carry out and record care plans and, in accordance with special instructions, you may administer medication. These positions are physically demanding. You would need to be prepared to act to ensure the health and safety of individuals in emergency situations. You must be able to stand, bend, stretch, and lift bedridden and/or incapacitated individuals. Salary range above features hiring rate of Direct Support Assistant Trainee (SG-7) and the job rate of Direct Support Assistant (SG-9).

Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable. 2) Investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees. 3) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR). Prospective employees may be required to pay any necessary fees. Additionally, prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
