Minimum Qualifications • Potential candidates will have or be in the process of completing a BS or BA in natural resources, planning, forestry, environmental science, geography or GIS.
• Proficiency and experience with ArcGIS Desktop 10.x
Duties Description The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a GIS Trails Technician position for the Empire State Trail. The Empire State Trail is a 750-mile bike and walking pathway from New York City to Canada and Albany to Buffalo. The GIS Technician will coordinate with staff at the Hudson River Valley Greenway and other state agencies involved in development of the Empire State Trail initiative. The position is a temporary/seasonal position located in Albany, NY at 625 Broadway in the GIS Bureau. The GIS project is expected to have duration of one year or longer. Extensive field work and travel all over the state will be required.
Under supervision of GIS Bureau staff, primary duties include database development and maintenance, GPS data collection and processing resulting GIS data into the statewide database, cartographic production, and GIS analysis for the Empire State Trail. GPS data collection duties include inventorying the Empire State trail, supporting infrastructure and amenities along the trail.
Additional Comments • Familiarity with Trimble GPS units (such as the GeoXT) and Pathfinder Office.
• Familiarity with ESRI tools and skills such as cartographic representations, python scripting, model builder, ArcGIS online
• Strong communication skills
• GIS Certificate
• GIS Internship experience (unpaid or for college credit is acceptable)
