Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including or supplemented by twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: silviculture, forest mensuration, forest protection, forest soils, dendrology botany, land surveying and forest biology, OR one (1) year of diversified, technical forestry experience in two (2) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.

Duties Description Conduct ground surveys for Southern Pine Beetle (SPB), collect stand data, verify infestations mapped from the air, and prioritize infestations for suppression.

Suppress SPB infestations by cutting infested pitch pine trees.

Provide outreach to the general public and local government officials on SPB and DEC’s efforts to mitigate its impacts.

Assist in the collection of research data to further the operational capabilities of DEC’s suppression efforts. Research assistance includes: collecting bark cores, documenting pitch pine color change, collecting suppressed stand characteristics, documenting SPB mortality caused by suppression cutting, and characterizing infestation expansion rates.

Additional Comments This position will require the use and maintenance of a chainsaw. The appointed candidate will attend Game of Logging Level 1 and Level 2 courses. Prior chainsaw experience is preferred.

The position will require the ability to tow trailers and operate off road vehicles.
Must be able to lift more than 50 pounds. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and/or work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment, or demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.

Funding for this position is secured through 3/31/18 with a possibility of continuing.
