Minimum Qualifications 1. Four years of experience performing engineering technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; or as supervisor or drafter; OR

2. Graduation for high school (or possession of a high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized education authority or a USAFI GED diploma high school level) AND one year of the experience described in option 1 above; OR

3. Graduation from a high school technical education program in technical aeronautics, technical architectural drafting and building construction; technical chemistry, industrial chemistry, technical electricity/electronics, technical mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems or computer circuitry; OR

4. Eighteen college semester credit hours in any combination of the following courses: engineering; such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and/or sanitary; public health; environmental and/or engineering technology; drafting; mathematics; surveying; computer science, environmental science; and/or the natural and physical sciences.

Duties Description The Stream Monitoring and Assessment Section seeks a technician to assist the Section in office, laboratory and field work related to all aspects of the DEC’s ambient stream and river monitoring program.
Specific duties and qualifications include:
• Assisting in the development, update, and maintenance of various components of the Section’s monitoring data management system. Therefore, experience working with Mircrosoft Access databases and other data storage platforms is preferred.

• Assisting in monitoring data analysis and reporting. Some experience working with statistical software packages and their programming languages such as “R” is preferred.

• Laboratory sample sorting and identification of benthic macroinvertebrates. Candidates should be familiar with use of dichotomous keys.

• Laboratory sample processing of acute and chronic toxicity tests and sediment microtox samples.

• Collection of samples, field measurements, and observations from streams, rivers, and lakes across New York State. Candidates should be familiar with routine biological and water column chemical monitoring methods. Candidates must be able to work well in a team, work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions, work from boats, lift up to 40 lbs., and be able to travel overnight regularly during the field season (with reimbursement).

• Compilation and management of field and laboratory data, including data entry and organization of electronic files. Candidates should be familiar with the use of tablets for data collection and with development of tablet data entry methods, Microsoft Access and statistical packages used in the interpretation of monitoring data.

• Development and maintenance of information about the Stream Monitoring and Assessment Section and its programs on the internal and public DEC websites.

• Development of GIS based datasets related to statewide monitoring locations and water quality. Strong GIS skills are required for this position including experience using spatial analyst extensions and other geographically-based statistical tools in ArcGIS.

Position is seasonal/temporary and expected to last through March 31 , 2018, although program needs and funding will determine the actual end date, which could be sooner.
