Minimum Qualifications 1. Four years of experience performing engineering technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; or as supervisor or drafter; OR

2. Graduation for high school (or possession of a high school equivalency diploma issued by a recognized education authority or a USAFI GED diploma high school level) AND one year of the experience described in option 1 above; OR

3. Graduation from a high school technical education program in technical aeronautics, technical architectural drafting and building construction; technical chemistry, industrial chemistry, technical electricity/electronics, technical mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems or computer circuitry; OR

4. Eighteen college semester credit hours in any combination of the following courses: engineering; such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and/or sanitary; public health; environmental and/or engineering technology; drafting; mathematics; surveying; computer science, environmental science; and/or the natural and physical sciences.

Duties Description Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Office Related
• Assist in entering, analysis and presentation of data collected through the Division of Water (DOW) Lakes Monitoring and Assessment Section (LMAS) monitoring programs
• Use various DOW and agency databases for a variety of tasks to support LMAS
• Assist the DEC Lake Classification and Inventory (LCI) program with data management, reporting and field season planning
• Assist the NY Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program (CSLAP) with sample kit preparation, data management and reporting
• Assist the DOW Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) program with data management, volunteer training and other programmatic tasks (preparation of field sheets and sampling supplies, etc.)
Field Related
• Participate in all training necessary to conduct sampling and operate vessels
• Assist in the logistic planning for sampling trips through LCI
• Assist in LCI field surveys and sampling of lakes
• Assist in the preparation of LCI sampling supplies and equipment
• Assist in the operation and maintenance of electronic and other equipment used to monitor water quality
• Assist with the collection and identification of aquatic plants collected through the LCI and entering of plant information into the iMap database
• Assist other Department staff in order to carry out other needed lake and/or stream sampling activities conducted or coordinated by the Department, including any special studies conducted by the Division of Water

Additional Comments Preferred qualifications:
• Familiarity with ArcGIS, data management, and basic research skills
• Familiarity with databases programs including FileMaker or Access
• Previous experience in water sampling
• Ability to operate and trailer small motorized boats
• Ability to troubleshoot electrical/mechanical issues related to aquatic sampling equipment
• Familiarity with aquatic plant identification
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
• Ability to assist with the operation of a small sampling vessels
• Ability to swim



Unique Duties
• Valid NYS driver’s license and ability to drive long distances across New York State
• Willingness to work long days and travel for 2-3 consecutive days within New York State
• Ability to carry up to 40 pounds of gear over uneven terrain


Exact hours will be discussed at interview. Position is seasonal/temporary and expected to last through March 31 , 2018, although program needs and funding will determine the actual end date, which could be sooner.
