Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's Degree and two years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree in the appropriate field and one year of professional research experience in that field. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. A Master of Science or higher degree in Physical or Atmospheric Sciences or related field is preferred.
Area of Specialty is Air Pollution. Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in the following fields: air quality modeling, statistical analysis and interpretation of data, meteorological modeling, research and evaluation of emerging air quality modeling techniques.

Duties Description The Regional, Urban Modeling and Analysis Section provides scientific and technical support to the Division of Air Resources in the development of State Implementation Plans (SIPs) and in assessment of ambient air quality data as well as continued research in air quality modeling and forecasting. Under the direction of the Chief, Regional Urban Modeling and Analysis Section, the primary responsibilities of the Research Scientist I with the Bureau of Air Quality Analysis and Research will be:
• Research and assist in the implementation of technological developments in mathematical modeling:
• Prepare inputs and use grid-based photochemical modeling systems to investigate control strategies for the improvement in ambient air quality for criteria and non-criteria pollutants.
• Assist in the preparation of regional scale emissions inventory processing in support of State Implementation Plan development.
• Participate in EPA and regional workgroups to evaluate air quality models and tools to assess air quality impacts.
• Analyze Mesonet meteorological data to aid in development of robust predictive models for planning of extreme weather events and air pollution episodes.
• Prepare graphical and statistical analysis of meteorological and air quality data sets to explore relationships between monitoring sites and weather patterns.
• Prepare reports and present findings at technical conferences and workshops.
• Provide additional air quality forecasting support and technical assistance during emergency events.
• Evaluate the adequacy of monitoring sites for studies in progress
• Participate in meetings and provide technical assistance to coworkers in DEC and other state agencies.
• Conduct collaborative research with other Bureaus to utilize air quality and meteorological data for regulatory purposes.
• Keep abreast of developments in the air quality modeling field by staying current with published scientific literature. Summarize and communicate findings to program staff.
• Must be able to prepare detailed, technically accurate, well written reports.
• Must possess good written and oral communication skills to present results and analysis.
• Must have knowledge and experience in the use of higher level computer programs.
• Must be able to travel to meetings and conferences.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel, overnight and overtime travel may be required.
