Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Section 70.1 Transfer: One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Senior Companion Program Coordinator or Supervisor Correctional Facility Volunteer Services.

Provisional Appointment: Candidates may be eligible for a non-permanent provisional appointment. For a non-permanent provisional appointment, candidates must have either:
1) One year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Supervisor, Volunteer Services; OR
2) Six years of professional experience in the administration of a volunteer program; OR
3) Bachelor’s degree AND two years of professional experience in the administration of a volunteer program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess the following qualifications:

• Experience working in institutions with diverse collections including, but not limited to, a combination of art, history and science OR two years of experience supporting educationally based programming within a cultural institution through volunteer engagement.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Coordinator, Volunteer Services position within the New York State Museum (NYSM). Under the direction of the Chief, Museum Education and Visitor Services, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for the management and oversight of volunteer programs, facilitation of opportunities for potential volunteers and provide appropriate volunteer staff in relation to requested program needs and responsibilities. Other duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Recruit and train all Information Specialist volunteers working in the Cultural Education Center main lobby;
• Manage volunteer personnel activities including recruitment, screening, interviewing and placement of all interested volunteers and interns within OCE;
• Review all program offices’ volunteer and intern needs and requests on a continual basis;
• Monitor and maintain volunteer tracking program and generate reports, as needed;
• Maintain records on NYSM daily and annual attendance as well as non-registered and registered school groups and generate reports, as needed;
• Coordinate all requests for NYSM building access, identification badges and parking for volunteers and interns;
• Maintain and update NYSM front desk with daily activity information for OCE, the Empire State Plaza and Concourse to ensure volunteers can provide current, accurate information to the public;
• Organize professional development opportunities and appreciation activities for volunteers; and
• Supervise volunteer staff.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent or non-permanent provisional appointment. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Wednesday through Sunday (9:00am – 5:00pm) including holidays, weekends and occasional overtime. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. *Leads to a maximum salary of $70,566 based on annual performance advances.
