Minimum Qualifications Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.

Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced lawyer to serve as Deputy Bureau Chief in its Health Care Bureau in New York City. The Health Care Bureau seeks to protect consumers from deceptive or illegal practices through bringing civil prosecutions for violations of health, insurance, deceptive practice and other applicable laws. The Bureau has been recognized for its enforcement work in the areas of mental health parity and predatory practices, among other areas, as well as for its consumer Helpline, which assists in resolution of individual consumer complaints. The Bureau has nine attorneys as well as a team of paralegals and other staff that comprise the Helpline.
The Deputy Bureau Chief responsibilities include overseeing and advancing the Bureau’s civil enforcement efforts, including reviewing briefs, managing lawyers and support staff, working closely with the Bureau Chief to develop and execute enforcement vision and strategy using litigation, policy, and educational tools. We are seeking candidates with at least eight (8) years of civil litigation or prosecutorial experience. The ideal candidate will have (i) knowledge of federal and state health and/or insurance laws, (ii) experience in every aspect of litigation, including initiation of litigation, discovery, motions, oral arguments, trials and settlements; and (iii) at least three (3) years of experience managing attorneys and litigation teams.
