Minimum Qualifications Applicants should possess strong analytical, and writing skills, demonstrate an attention to detail, possess good interpersonal skills, and have the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. An interest in education finance policy is required.

Duties Description The New York State Division of the Budget is the primary fiscal advisor to the Governor, developing, negotiating and implementing one of the largest government budgets in the country. The Division’s professional staff review and develop recommendations for the Governor on State agencies’ and municipalities’ fiscal needs and prepare the State’s Executive Budget.

An intern is sought in the Education Unit to be part of a seven-person team responsible for budgeting over $25 billion in School Aid programs. This position provides broad-based experience in all aspects of elementary and secondary education finance. Assignments may include:

• Analysis of the funding level and distribution of School Aid;
• Assisting in the development of policy and fiscal recommendations for the Executive Budget;
• Evaluation of school district finances, including property taxes, spending and budgets, as well as Federal education funding;
• Analysis of policy issues such as student performance, school construction, pupil transportation, community schools and career and technical education;
• Review of proposed legislation;
• Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of education initiatives; and
• Monitoring State spending on education and updating the State’s Financial Plan.
