Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:
Engineer Trainee, SG-18:
A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Civil Engineering Technology; Construction Engineering; Construction Engineering Technology; Construction Management Engineering Technology; Geotechnical Engineering; Hydraulics Engineering; Materials Engineering; Materials Science and Engineering; Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Structural Engineering; Transportation Engineering or Transportation Planning and Engineering
OR
Proof of successful completion of a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
Preferred Qualifications:
If you are applying with proof of successful completion of the FE examination, preference will be given to applicants with one year of engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, bridges, airports, waterways, or traffic management and safety systems.
NOTE: Individuals appointed as an Engineer Trainee are required to complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as an Engineer Trainee and pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. If you obtain your FE by the end of the first year you will advance to the title of Assistant Engineer Civil/Transportation, G-20. If you do not obtain your FE by the end of the second year of the traineeship, you will be terminated from your position.
Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation), SG-20:
Proof of successful completion of a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

Duties Description Under the direction and supervision of a licensed, professional engineer, the incumbent will perform a variety of duties, including, but not limited to, the following:
• Prepare and/or check designs for bridges and other structural components;
• Prepare and/or check layouts for entire bridge structures; and
• Assist in field inspection of project sites or existing bridges and structures.
The incumbent may be assigned to various program areas throughout their employment based on operational need. Occasionally, the incumbent may also be called upon to support department needs in other locations. This effort could range from participating remotely to occasional travel, as necessary, to support program operations, capital program delivery, emergency efforts or other critical department initiatives.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
