Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications A Doctorate, Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, epidemiology, geology, geochemistry, industrial hygiene, medicine, natural science, physical science, public health or toxicology AND ten (10) years of professional work experience with primary responsibility for investigating, assessing or controlling the human health impacts of environmental or occupational exposure to chemical, biological or radiological agents, or physical hazards. Eight (8) years of this experience must have included technical leadership and supervision of technical professional staff in a governmental agency. Technical leadership must have included responsibility for scientific/technical development, implementation and on-going evaluation of program operations, budgeting, staff development, program planning, policy development and analysis.
Educational substitution – A Professional Engineer’s (P.E.) license may be substituted for the required degree.

Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have educational preparation and previous work experience that demonstrates skill in leading a large, complex organization with multifaceted programs, a large staff and a significant budget. S/he must be knowledgeable in and capable of applying the tools and techniques of environmental public health including engineering, epidemiology, health risk assessment and communication. Understanding the components of the state policy making/implementation process including the roles and relationships of executive, legislature, federal, state and local governmental agencies and interest groups is critical. Candidates must demonstrate the capacity to persuasively represent the Center with the agency, with other organizations, the public, elected officials and the press.

Duties Description The Director, Center for Environmental Health provides leadership and executive direction for the CEH which consists of the Division of Environmental Protection, the Division of Environmental Health Assessment and the Division of Environmental Health Investigation and staff in the Department’s Regional Offices and District Offices. CEH, with approximately 350 employees and a budget of $64 million, implements the State’s laws, regulations, guidelines and programs designed to assess, correct, control and prevent those factors in the environment that can potentially adversely affect public health. The Center also directs or guides the work of over 150 professionals in the Department’s regional and district offices and 2,000 more in county health departments, delivering environmental health services statewide.

Additional Comments Salary commensurate with Education and Experience. Exempt, full time. Travel, including to locations that may not be served by public transportation, is required.
