Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.
Duties Description The primary duty of this position is Flood Protection which includes tandem and single axle dump truck and trailer operation to transport pumps, tractors, skidsteers, backhoes, dozers, chippers, and other State assets in direct support of Flood Protection Operation. This position will also assist with the planning, layout, design and supervision of maintenance and repair projects, diagnosis and correction of mechanical or structural problems, and performance of all tasks using tools in related trades. This position also includes operating machine tools such as metal cutting saws, planers, radial drill presses, etc. as well as operation of mowing tractors on and around levees, self contained flood pumps and PTO driven flood pumps, chain saws and tree chippers, wheel loaders, excavators, bull dozers, and other heavy equipment. This position will also perform routine replacement and repairs of plumbing equipment and installation of new equipment, perform skilled carpentry activities (repairing doors, windows, stairs, railings, locks, door hardware), operate shop machinery to make and assemble signs, erect and move partitions, build forms for concrete work, erect and renovate buildings and structures, perform skilled masonry repairs and installations such as pointing up brick and stone work, patching plaster walls, setting tiles, laying brick and stone, finishing concrete work, and repair, rebuild, and assist in installing metal, shingle, and built-up roofs.
Will be required to work outdoors in adverse environments including foul weather and with insects; interact with other employees and citizens in a positive, friendly manner; perform routine electrical work including installing and maintaining lighting fixtures, outlets, and switches; perform ice and snow removal and grounds and building maintenance, including moving office furniture. May be on feet for an entire work shift except lunch and scheduled breaks.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Must have valid Class A CDL at time of appointment.
The anticipated end date of the position is 03/31/19. Work days and hours will be discussed at interview.
