Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must possess certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID); OR a passing score on the written portion of the RID certification examination AND two years of experience providing sign language interpretive services; OR a rating of intermediate or above on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview conducted by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Services – Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) is seeking candidates for a Translator (Manual Communications) position in the Binghamton District Office. This Office assist persons with disabilities to attain employment, educational and/or independent living goals. The incumbent of this position will provide interpretation services to a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who is deaf or hearing-impaired including providing sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting among colleagues, consumers and constituents. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Gather information verbally;
• Attend meetings or conferences with the counselor;
• Schedule appointments in situations where there may be communication difficulties; and
• Assist in the preparation of written material to ensure material is presented in a grammatically correct format and is easily understood.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a temporary, hourly appointment contingent on the continued employment of the Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who the incumbent is assigned to assist. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of RID certification and/or Sign Communication Proficiency Interview rating will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Regular travel, up to 20%, will be required.
