Minimum Qualifications Registered Professional Nurse; and certification by the New York State Education Department in a specialty area to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (NP).
Bachelor's in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
NP must also maintain NYS RN license and registration.
Duties Description The nurse practitioner (NP) will work with the college physician and 2 nurse practitioners at the Student Health Service on the campus of SUNY Cortland. SUNY Cortland is a largely undergraduate residential campus of over 7000 students located in central New York State. Student Health Service provides for the primary care of the student population at a facility centrally located on campus. Patient mix is a variety of acute care of illnesses and injuries as well as care of chronic conditions and wellness care. This position will require a significant amount of sports medicine and adolescent sexual health.
1.Takes directed histories and performs physical
exams on students who come to the Student
Health Service for acute medical care.
2.Orders, performs, and/or interprets appropriate lab and radiological studies as
necessary to arrive at a diagnosis.
3.Participates in the Student Health Service's Laboratory Proficiency Testing Program.
4.Makes tentative diagnoses and treatment
plans. Writes prescriptions within bounds
defined by state privileging guidelines for NP's.
5.Informs patients of findings, instructs patients
about pathophysiology of condition and correct
way of taking medicines and reviews self-care
measures.
6.Consults with supervising physician on unusual or
difficult cases or cases on which a second opinion is advisable.
7.Refers certain cases to appropriate local specialists, hospital emergency room or family physician.
8.Takes directed histories and performs physical
exams on students requiring medical clearance
for intercollegiate athletics. Takes directed histories and performs physical exams on female students presenting to Student Health Service for acute gynecological problems.
10.Emphasizes preventative and self-care modalities during
the course of clinical encounters, as appropriate.
11.Involves him/herself in the health education of students.
12.Maintains up-to-date CPR certification.
13.Will be involved in continuing her/his own medical education.
14.Participates in activities related to the Student Health Service Quality Assurance and Peer Review Programs.
15.Maintains patient confidentiality.
16.Provides care in a culturally sensitive manner.
