Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of litigation experience, strong writing skills, an interest in technology and related legal issues, and a commitment to public service. The ideal candidate would have an understanding and/or experience in technology and related legal issues, privacy and data security.
Applicants must also reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the OAG be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
Duties Description The New York State Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an attorney with experience in information technology and consumer protection law for its Bureau of Internet and Technology (BIT) in New York City. The Bureau of Internet and Technology is responsible for the enforcement of New York’s privacy and consumer protection laws in the online and tech environment, as well as for enforcement of New York’s data breach notification laws. In recent years, the Bureau has investigated a wide range of issues affecting technology, privacy and data security, including spyware, spam, online privacy, child safety, gambling and internet fraud. Recent investigations have included broadband internet speeds, daily fantasy sports, data breaches and events ticketing.
The responsibilities of the selected candidate will include target development, civil investigations, and litigating affirmative cases on behalf of the Office, as well as consumer outreach and drafting legislation.
Additional Comments Salary to be determined commensurate with experience.
